Water Societal Benefit Area

Before 2015, GEO aims to produce comprehensive sets of data and information products to support decision-making for efficient management of the world's water resources, based on coordinated, sustained observations of the water cycle on multiple scales. (From GEOSS Strategic Targets Document, approved at GEO-VI).

The activities undertaken in EUGENE's Water work package aim at analysing the European Earth Observation activities in support of the understanding of the water cycle and water management. It will bring together relevant European actors and programmes, analyse their current plans and contributions, and discuss the way forward for a more effective, visible, sustained and structured European GEO contribution to the SBA on Water.

In order to prepare for this discussion, the work package leader, University of Bonn, conducted a study of the Status Quo of relevant European activities and presented the results in a report. Based on this work and report, a workshop has been organised by University of Bonn and the German Federal Institute of Hydrology (BfG) to start a discussion among relevant actors. As a result of the interactions with the different European actors and following the workshop, the work package leader will draft a strategic document which will outline a proposed European approach towards a coordinated contribution to GEO.

As a contribution to the European position for the 2010 GEO Summit and its documentation, University of Bonn prepared a section on Water for the EUGENE brochure, which can be found here.
